Celebrating Science and Scholarship
Like many units here at Michigan State University, much of the work we do at University Outreach and Engagement happens under the radar, in quiet spaces like conference venues and classrooms.
That’s why I love this time of year. We get to play “outside,” starting with MSU Science Festival in April. Throughout the month, community members are invited to attend free events celebrating and exploring science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
Adults and children can choose from 200 age-appropriate activities, ranging from statewide astronomy nights to developing film with beer, creating edible ice cream aquifers, and learning about robots, recycling, and regenerative medicine.

In 2018, Aaron Stark stood on stage in Boulder, Colorado, and began his Ted Talk by uttering the words, “I was almost a school shooter.” Stark, a high school student in 1996, admitted through tear-streaked eyes and a quivering voice that in a moment of pain and anger, he almost committed a terrible atrocity.

Using these simple tools and elements, MSU Professor Kelly Salchow MacArthur shared her passion for art and sport with children in Paris ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympic games.
The two-time Olympian visited two children’s centers October 23-28, 2023, as part of the Olympian Artists Program, run through the Olympic Museum and the Olympic Foundation for Culture.

Amid the happy hubbub of a preschool classroom after recess, MSU nursing student Lexie Salazar leans in with a stethoscope to listen to a 4-year-old’s lung sounds.
She’ll note any differences between the little girl’s breathing before and after her time playing outside on this unseasonably warm March day at FOCUS: Hope’s Center for Children in Detroit. Founded in 1968, FOCUS: Hope offers early education and other programs including job training and senior services aimed at countering the effects of racism, poverty, and social injustice.
