Human Trafficking Awareness through Music, Artistic Expression, and Collaboration

Music is a powerful way to tell a story, convey a message, make a point, or spread awareness. Mark Sullivan is knowledgeable and perceptive about the capabilities of music composition. He specializes in the analysis and performance of contemporary music and in studies that relate music to the other arts and society. His work to address human trafficking reflects an intersection of music, artistic expression, societal challenge, engaged scholarship, and community collaboration.

Engaging the Next Generation of Journalists in Detroit Schools

The Crain MSU Detroit High School Journalism Program provides collaborative learning opportunities for student journalists and teachers in Detroit high schools by connecting them with the resources and expertise of journalism faculty and professional journalists, who work with students to produce quarterly newspapers and a news website.

Administered by the Detroit Free Press since 1985, the program came under the leadership of MSU's School of Journalism last year. As the home of the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA), which offers numerous journalism conferences and camps to thousands of young people each year, and which, for many years, has provided scholarships for students in Detroit to attend the programs and camps, the School of Journalism is a natural fit ... read more

If Roads Could Talk: Sensors Communicate Inner Workings of Infrastructure

What if infrastructure could talk? What if our roads and bridges could sense areas of internal weakness or compromised integrity and share that information with civil engineers? That information might not just help maintain transportation infrastructure, but could lead to better, more cost effective decision-making when the time comes to set priorities and allocate limited resources.

Nizar Lajnef, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Michigan State, is working to develop sensors that have the potential to give infrastructure that ability. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, Lajnef is creating smart sensors that diagnose damage and mechanical failure in roads and bridges.
