Green Energy Technologies Collaboration with Boys and Girls Club of Lansing Receives Outreach Scholarship Community Partnership Award

Angela Calabrese Barton, professor in the College of Education, and the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing, led by president Carmen Turner, were named co-recipients of the Outreach Scholarship Community Partnership Award during the annual MSU Awards Convocation on Tuesday, February 14, 2012.

Calabrese Barton and Turner, representing the community partner, were recognized for "GET City" (Green Energy Technologies in the City), a collaboration that engages at-risk youth in science, technology, engineering and math, and encourages them to become community science experts who can bring about change by linking green energy technology with local environmental health, responsibility, and practice ... read more

Mothers in Motion Program Promotes Healthy Lifestyle

Young, low-income mothers with young children face challenges in their daily lives that may make a healthy lifestyle seem out of reach, thus increasing their risk of obesity, leading to type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mei-Wei Chang, an associate professor in MSU's College of Nursing, is leading the Mothers In Motion intervention program, in partnership with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and MSU Extension.

The aim of this project is to help low-income mothers who are overweight or obese improve their health by eating well, being active, and dealing with stress. According to Chang, these women are highly motivated to make healthy lifestyle behavioral changes. "They would love to make changes, but they don't know where to begin. They either don't have access to the resources, or the resources don't fit their needs," she says ... read more

Community-University Partnerships: Invested in Michigan's Future

Michigan State University is part of a statewide event planned by Michigan's fifteen public universities and The Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan to showcase community-university partnerships that contribute to the well-being of all Michigan citizens. The program will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Michigan State Capitol Rotunda in downtown Lansing.

The event is an opportunity for elected officials, policymakers, and Michigan residents to view posters and hear short presentations about exemplary community-university initiatives as well as dialogue and share information with higher education researchers, staff, and community partners.

Local and regional initiatives that contribute to entrepreneurial, business, and workforce development for Michigan citizens will be featured in descriptions of academic partnerships and collaborations with small businesses, corporations, hospitals, schools, and communities in every part of the state ... read more
