About the Engaged Scholar

Engaged scholarship celebrates Michigan State University's ongoing partnership with Michigan, our nation, and our world.

MSU's Office of University Outreach and Engagement uses the term "The Engaged Scholar" to describe a family of initiatives that focus on collaborative partnerships between MSU and its external constituents—partnerships forged for mutual benefit and learning, with an emphasis on research.

The Engaged Scholar Magazine includes stories of innovative research and teaching collaborations that illustrate the breadth and depth of MSU's engagement with society; news about the University's contributions to and leadership in the scholarship of engagement; and information about resources and services MSU provides to communities, organizations, agencies, and institutions. The magazine is published annually. Each issue has a theme, which may focus on a social issue, a geographic region, a broad-based strategic initiative, or some other topic.

The Engaged Scholar E-Newsletter is a quarterly supplement to the magazine. The more frequent publication schedule allows for timely updates about upcoming events, partnership and funding opportunities, and other announcements. The newsletter is issued in October, February, and April.

The Engaged Scholar Speakers Series was co-sponsored by the National Collaborative for the Study of University Engagement. NCSUE invited renowned speakers to address issues related to the theory and practice of outreach and engagement, with a particular focus on community-based participatory research. Topics ranged from research using citizen knowledge work (IT and usability) to partnerships in health professions, balancing hope and critique in the public humanities, higher education's public mission, the urban setting, and work and family issues. The archive sessions are available as webstreamed video.

The Office of the Associate Provost for University Outreach and Engagement fosters MSU's land grant mission by connecting university knowledge with community knowledge in mutually beneficial ways. UOE provides resources to assist academic departments, centers and institutes, and MSU Extension on priority issues of concern to society by encouraging, supporting, and collaborating with MSU faculty and academic staff to generate, apply, transmit, and preserve knowledge.
